Concerns About Livestock Wells
Livestock Wells are not regulated by PWSSP, as a result, livestock
wells are not required to be monitor for the 72 contaminants.
Although this is the case, PWSSP recommends that you haul your
drinking water from an approved water source. The Navajo Tribal
Utility Authority maintains watering points where you can purchase
safe drinking water.
Livestock wells were placed in all areas of the Navajo Nation and
were intended for livestock use only. These sources of water are not
tested recently and some of wells were tested for any contaminants
and may pose health concerns to various individuals. Those who
may be affected the most are pregnant women, children and
individuals with severe illnesses due to contaminants such as
bacteria, viruses, nitrates/nitrites which are commonly found in
untreated water.
The livestock wells vary in depth that some are shallow and some
are deep. The depths wells are 20' - 50' and some 1,500' or
greater. The shallow wells may be easily contaminated with
livestock feces and urine. Other contaminants may also reach the
shallow aquifer such as automobile oil, gasoline and antifreeze,
which are volatiles organic chemicals.
Please consult with your local community health representative, your
local clinic and health care provider or the PWSSP for further
information.
Blue Gap Chapter House, Arizona Due to the low depth, the water is easily contaminated with livestock feces and urine.
